The history

  • 1953

    On October the 27th, 1953, Basil Pheloung and Neville Pearson opened Bradfords of Broadway Home Furnishers, on Broadway in Newmarket. In those days it was a daring move to strike out as an independent furniture retailer in New Zealand but it wasn’t long before the response reassured Basil and Neville that they had done the right thing. New Zealanders were ready for something new and innovative, and Bradfords of Broadway provided it.

  • 1971

    In the early 1970s Basil’s tragic passing away brought to the company his wife, Beverley and her eldest son Mark. Bradfords started to move in new directions. Being a fashion leader the company swung through the sixties, went paisley in the seventies and then grew shoulder pads in the eighties. A strong sense of innovation and imagination drove the company through all these decades.

  • 1991

    Neville retired at the same time that Bradfords were starting to outgrow their Newmarket site, so in the early nineties the company moved to the Bradfords Centre in Greenlane. The introduction of more family members heralded yet another new phase as the company started to look more and more to Europe for inspiration.

  • 2014

    Further expansion of the showroom to now have the largest collection of quality furniture in NZ (nearly 3000 sqm)

  • 2021

    The pass over to the third generation to lead into the future.

  • Today

    Innovation, imagination and design are still the keys used in delivering services and products that are unique and exciting. The Italian influence is now strong in a market that is savvy about good design and expectant high quality. Bradfords, seventy years on, still offers furniture and furnishing designs that are unique and exciting.
